Good Pet Care with Pet Dental Care

Did you know that more than 80 percent of dogs and cats over the age of five have some degree of dental disease? Moreover, did you know that seemingly small dental issues could lead to major internal health issues if left untreated? Our furry companions develop dental plaque, tartar buildup, gingivitis, broken teeth and even periodontal disease if they go without sufficient care for their teeth. Untreated dental disease can lead to tooth loss and contribute to other chronic illnesses, including kidney, liver and heart problems. All too often we see patients who have simply outlived their teeth, or have suffered from systemic illnesses (heart disease, kidney failure, etc.) caused, or worsened by, dental disease. With modest investment and proper attention to dental health, this does not need to happen.

Because you love those sloppy kisses...

Every Sunset Vet exam includes a dental check-up. If we find a problem, we’ll work together with you to ensure your furry friend’s dental health will be met.

Our facility is equipped for professional pet teeth cleaning. We do a great job because we know it’s essential to your pet’s overall health.

All dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia. Even the best-behaved pet won’t open up and say “ah.” Prior to administering any anesthesia drugs, we perform a physical exam and blood profile. Every patient’s needs are assessed on a case-by-case basis to identify any potential issues and ensure optimal care.

What you can do at home:

Cat and dog owners who want their pets to live as long as possible take time to care for their pets’ dental health. To keep your pets’ teeth, gums and mouth healthy, we advise giving them dental chews on a regular basis; this will help manage plaque and tartar buildup. It’s also important for your pets to have regular dental exams and professional dental scaling/polishing.

Six signs your dog or cat may have dental or periodontal disease:

  1. Bad breath

  2. Red or swollen gums

  3. A yellow-brown crust near the gum line

  4. Loose or missing teeth

  5. Discomfort when the mouth or gums are touched

  6. Decreased appetite or weight loss due to difficulty chewing

Is your pet showing any signs of these problems with their teeth? Would you like to avoid the pain and expense of preventable dental disease and health issues down the road?
