Raw Dog Food

Raw dog food has gotten a lot of attention these days. With trends towards organic, natural and being overall more health-conscious, pet owners are seeking the same wholesome nutrition in their dog’s diet.

However, an increasing body of research is leading scientists to caution against the use of raw canine food. It turns out that it may be far more harmful than beneficial.

Potentially a Dangerous Superbug Spreader

Scientists within and outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) caution that raw dog food can spread dangerous germs such as Salmonella, Listeria and E. coli. However, emerging research shown at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases introduced the risk of the presence of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

This European research team found alarming levels of stubborn, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in raw dog food in pet shops and grocery stores in Portugal. Some of the identified bacteria matched superbugs found in European hospital patients. This, therefore, could lead to raw dog food being categorized as a serious health risk to humans with the potential to spread worldwide.

Superbugs are a cause for concern today, but pose even further risk in the coming years. Because of their resistance to drugs, these bacteria can turn a minor cut or infection into a serious or possibly life-threatening ailment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), superbugs kill 700,000 people each year presently, but by 2050 could result in up to 10 million deaths annually. Therefore, it’s vital to find their origins and minimize their spread.

Putting Dog’s Best Friend at Risk

Sunset Veterinary Clinic’s veterinarian, Dr. Lucas White, spoke to the risks associated with feeding your dog raw food: ”Feeding your dogs and cats raw food creates a serious risk of illness. The main concern is the constant presence of E. coli, Salmonella and other bacteria on food bowls and kitchen prep surfaces that could be ingested by your pet. Not only is there the risk of illness from raw food, but these raw foods are also often nutritionally inadequate for your pets.”

“The risk of illness in people that feed raw food is there. Dogs and cats sometimes get sick but are more resistant than us. The main concern is the presence of E. coli, Salmonella, etc in the environment on food bowls, kitchen prep surfaces, etc. We recommend not feeding raw not only for these concerns, but most are also nutritionally inadequate.” – Dr. Lucas White
