How to Have a Pet-Friendly Home

Whether you’re welcoming a new kitten or simply want Fido to feel comfier at home, there are always things you can do to make your home more pet-friendly!

1. Make area rugs slip-proof.

Dogs will thank you for putting rubber treads on the bottoms of area rugs. Otherwise, one quick gallop across the room can mean sliding there instead.

2. Double check plants.

Certain plants are toxic for animals. Ivies and amaryllis are just a few examples of flora that should be given away to pet-free families or otherwise removed.

3. Set up scratching posts for cats.

Unless you favor gouged furniture and walls, it’s best to create a designated spot where cats can scratch.

4. Go “green” with cleaning supplies.

Your furry friends will be trotting around the house in their “bare feet,” so be sure that whatever you clean the floors and other surfaces with is bleach- and toxic chemical-free.

5. Create a designated area for each pet.

All pets will benefit from having their own area for sleeping, preening, and just hanging out. Add a bed for each animal, plus an eating area. It doesn’t have to be big, but it should be strictly their own.

6. Remove things you don’t want them getting into.

Many-a-scolding has happened over chewed heels, entire pizzas eaten off the table, or tipped vases. If you don’t want your pet getting into something, try to foresee the trouble, and move it to a safer place first!
