5 Summer Activities Your Dog Will Love, Vol 1

Dog Chasing Frisbee at the Park

If your dog seems bored this summer, here are 5 summer activities to try together. Just remember, when the weather gets hot, to keep your dog well hydrated and opt for cooler, shady spots to play in. Your Sunset Veterinary Clinic pet vet has lots of other ideas, so just ask (or just wait for Vol 2!).

1. Dog Agility Course

You can find some of these in Oklahoma City at different dog parks or you could build one in your own backyard with PVC pipe and ramps. You can have lots of fun training your dog to go through the course and you’ll both need a nap afterward.

2. Frisbee

If the agility course is too much work, try just playing Frisbee together. Many dogs go wild for Frisbee and you can both get a good workout, whether you’re in the backyard, at the local park or any other of your dog’s favorite haunts. Just keep a Frisbee in the car so you’re ready whenever your dog is.

3. Oklahoma City Dog Parks

Oklahoma City has some great dog parks like OKC PawPark or Myriad Gardens where you can let your dog off the leash to run and play safely. Some of them even have swimming spots for dogs (but just be sure your dog can swim and never leave her unattended). And call your veterinarian to make sure your dog is up-to-date on all vaccines.

4. Tracking

This is a fun way to let your dog show off his or her olfactory sleuthing skills! Hide a favorite toy or treat somewhere in the yard and let your dog sniff it out. You can play this game repeatedly by hiding the object in different places each time.

5. Obedience or Trick Training

If you have a new or younger dog, taking an obedience training class is a must. It’s also a great way to spend time bonding with your dog and having fun together. Our veterinarians can provide suggestions for local training classes and safe, fun tricks you can teach your dog.

Schedule an appointment at Sunset Veterinary Clinic for a summertime wellness check for your dog and to update any vaccinations or flea, tick and heartworm preventatives so your dog can enjoy the outdoors safely.

Stay tuned for even more summer activities that may be a little different.
